What is Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction involves the removal of skin and tissue from the breast, followed by reshaping and elevating to create a smaller, more proportionate bust size. Breast reduction surgery is a personal decision often undertaken for both health and aesthetic reasons. Breast reduction surgery might also help improve self-image and the ability to take part in physical activities. You can have breast reduction surgery at any age — sometimes even as a teenager. But breasts that aren’t yet fully developed might need a second surgery later in life.

Who are the best candidates for the Breast Reduction procedure?

Breast reduction surgery is ideal for people who have large breasts that cause the following issues:

  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Shoulder grooves from bra straps
  • Chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
  • Nerve pain
  • Being unable to participate in certain activities
  • Poor self-image due to large breasts
  • Trouble fitting into bras and clothing

People of any age can be good candidates for breast reduction surgery in Fort Lauderdale, sometimes even as teenagers. You should be close to your goal weight prior to breast reduction surgery. Our surgeons assess each patient individually to determine whether they are the right candidate for breast reduction.

What are the benefits of Breast Reduction?

The benefits of Breast Reduction include the following:

  • Improved confidence and self-expression
  • Easier to shop for bras and other types of clothing.
  • Improved back pain
  • Bras don’t hurt and are easier to fit into
  • Exercise with ease
  • Reduced skin irritation

Regardless of your motivation for seeking a breast reduction, our surgeons are here to guide you through the available options and assist you in making an informed decision that suits your needs.  This type of surgery can have a hugely positive impact on the rest of your life.

What to expect on the day of Breast Reduction surgery

Following your surgery, you will be taken into a recovery room to allow time for the anesthesia to wear off, and prepare for your journey home. Gauze or bandages will be applied to your incisions, and an elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and support the reconstructed breast.

Your surgeon will also advise you on the types of pain medication you will need throughout the recovery process. They will also give you detailed information on what to check on your bandages each day to ensure healing is on track.

It is recommended that you arrange transportation to and from the clinic so that you can avoid all strenuous activity during your recovery.

During the first week, you will need to monitor any pain, swelling, and bruising (medication may be required), and significantly limit your activity. The next two to three weeks of recovery will have you feeling much better and you can return to work, however, you will still need to limit your exercise and strenuous activities. After about a month post-surgery, you will need to continue to wear your support bra and continue being gentle with your breasts, but you will be able to slowly increase your activity. You will need to continue your regularly scheduled routine mammograms in the future. At this point, you will be able to discuss any scar optimization protocols to reduce their appearance.
